Funky business portraits

This was my second business portrait photoshoot with Lisa Blackler of Honesty Marketing.  The first shoot she hadn't given me a brief, just left it up to me.   Fast forward 18 months or so and Lisa had a specific idea of the photo she was after.  This is a good thing, gives me something to work towards.  I'll let Lisa explain in her own words...

"As part of the next phase of Honesty Marketing's development I wanted some images that reflected my no-nonsense non-corporate approach.  The brief to Mike was "attitude, rock chick, fierce".  He had to deal with my giggles and still managed to get some amazing shots which really reflect who I am and the overall feel that I want to convey for the business.  Mike works a certain kind of magic, and I'd use him again with no hesitation."

Thanks Lisa!  :-)  Another happy client.

A debt collector who carries a baseball bat?

Meet Sean Stevens from Dino Collections.  Sean was the subject of a recent photoshoot.  Of course he doesnt use the bat as anything other than a last resort while collecting debts (I may or may not be joking here!?), it's all about standing out from the crowd and being remembered in what is I'm sure a generally boring group of very samey people.

Apparently having the bat has already caused Sean to annoy some of the more "normal" (ie boring) competitors in his business, and he's also been refused a ride in a taxi!  Opps! :)

My point here is, that while he may annoy a few boring people, he's been noticed and he'll be remembered.

Standing out from the crowd

I really like it when my subjects know what they want from a photoshoot, and they come prepared.  It makes my job easier, and my subjects get results they generally like even more.

I met up with Suraj again recently during one of my business portrait phothshoot days in Central London.

As well as these photos we shot some more "normal" portraits.  However when Suraj gave me his image choices I noticed the fun 'super' shots were absent.  I thought to myself, "I'm not having any of that!", so I picked my favourite 'super' photos and sent them to him anyway.

I like them because they are different, they show the Suraj I know, and they will almost certainly be remembered once seen.

Being a little bit different in business isn't a bad thing, but always be yourself.  Don't try and fake it.

A cold business shoot in London

It was May bank holiday weekend in London.  It was stupidly cold, pissing down with rain, and it was the nastiest conditions I've had to take photos in for a good long while.

We used a couple of Watford hotels, hiding under umbrellas and roofs to stay dry.

Did I mention how bloody cold it was?

We shot a little at the first hotel, then moved half a mile up the road to a slightly nicer one.  We shot inside and out, and got the results.  Hard work in such conditions, but we done did it!

Thank you to my models and lovely new clients Donna & Hannah.

It was cold though.  Did I mention that?

What makes for a good profile photo?

What makes for a good profile photo?

Normally the first thing you we see is the persons profile photo.  People click around quickly, and have the attention span of a goldfish, so its vital to have a picture that people are going to notice and remember.  If it isn't then you've failed in the first step of creating your personal brand and you may have lost your chance to make that positive first impression.

Take my photo as an example.  The hat started off life as something practical, to keep the sun out of my eyes and rain off my glasses.  However over the months its taken on a life of its own and is now a part of my personal brand.  People recognise me because of it, and if I'm meeting someone for the first time I'll wear it and finding each other in a crowd is always easy.  So I use it in my pictures.

Get a decent photo to start with.  Do you really think its the best impression to show people a photo of you half pissed at a party?  It's all about the image.

Obviously I'm going to recommend getting professional photos done, but if you don't have the budget or just want to try something yourself to start with, then do just that.

I've never been a fan of using the self timer for portrait shots as the end results normally look staged, so better to get a friend to take a few photos of you, that way you aren't expecting the "click" and hopefully the results will be more natural.

Don't fart around using a tripod, and unless you know what you're doing turn the on camera flash off.  Get outside on a cloudy day, or if its sunny find some shade, or better still a shaded area that has some sunlight bounced into it (maybe from a building), and shoot.  Take lots of shots, it's digital, it ain't costing you nothing.  So take 30, 4o, 50 shots, or more if you want.  The last time I got a friend (thanks Jules) to take my photo I think we ended up taking over 100, of which I liked maybe 10, and use just 2 or 3.

Be really critical in the selection process.  It's a lesson I learned while shooting my first wedding.  I'd been invited along by another photographer as a "second shooter", and he said I could use 20 images from the wedding for my portfolio.  Having taken over 500 pictures and being forced to get down to just 20 was hard.  At first I thought he was being mean, but in hindsight I was learning a valuable lesson.  I was only using and showing the very best images from that wedding to the world.  This is why I often limit the number of pictures I give to my clients.  Not because I'm being tight, but because I want them to use only the very best images that show both them and me in the best possible way.

Once you've found a picture you like, stick with it.  Don't go changing it every few days or weeks, leave it alone.  I refer you back to people having the attention span of a goldfish while on the internet, so give them something to remember you by.  Consistency is the key word here.

Personally I hate images that are "dicked around" with.  Sure you can use photoshop effects, make yourself look like a work of art or a cartoon, but my advice for what its worth is don't.

Keep it simple.  Keep it natural.  Keep it you.

So there you go, just my views on what makes for a good profile photo.

Business Portraits in the City of London

Meet my latest client, Suraj Sodha.  He's also currently my favourite client because he bought a bag of Krispy Kreme doughnuts to the shoot with him.

We did the photoshoot on a Sunday next to the the Majors building by Tower Bridge.   Ws had to fight our way through the hundreds of tourists, but it was better than shooting on a week day and having to contend with the business people as well.

A client that knows what they want is good, makes my job so much easier.  The shoot was done in 20 minutes, and my doughnut eating client was so happy he had this to say...

"I highly recommend Michel Palmer for any professional photos that you need, whether it be business portraits or wedding photography. I recently had some business portraits done by Michael and am very pleased with the results. Michael was able to deliver exactly what I wanted from of the pictures using his unique style of photography which is fantastic. I will definitely be using Michael Palmer Photography again in the future, and encourage anyone to have a look at his portfolio of great pictures."

A more sensible business portrait

Savour this photograph.  You don't often see Paul Newton (right) looking all sensible and serious.

This shoot, done in just a couple of minutes after Paul had stepped "off stage" from doing a few magic tricks during Wooden Tigers VIP Event at Business South 2010, were for a training seminar that Paul and James Brown (left) are doing in a couple of weeks time.

The blurb on the Facebook event says;

"At last, James Brown and Paul Newton are going to teach you - yes YOU how to use some of their techniques to gain the following:

More belief in yourself AND your business
More money by making employees and clients happier
More time - by getting other people to do more work for you - happily!
More Confidence - and easy access to it whenever you need!
More Understanding - ever had a "I wish I had done this instead" moment? We'll show you how to think outside that horrible box as and when it happens.
"

At just £35 of your British Pounds this is a bargain price for two most excellent people.

The event takes place at AFC Bournemouth on 22th March and runs from 0900 to 1230.

To book contact Paul via his website - www.paul-newton.co.uk

Oh, and just incase you thought the photoshoot was all sensible, you'd be wrong.

Improve your profile photo

Earlier today I had the pleasure of meeting and photographing Sam Swinstead for the first time.  I've known her through Twitter for a little while now, but the only photo I'd seen was the inset picture above.

I walked into the room this morning, and if someone hadn't have said "Sam, here's Michael..." I honestly would never had recognised her.

Sam has changed her look, so I can only take a small fraction of the credit here, but I think and hope you'll agree that the new photo is a massive improvement on the old.

Anyway, what's my point?  Oh yeah....   if you change your appearance, then update and change your profile photo as well.

No terms or conditions - the photos are yours to do with as you please - use them on your website, business card, social networking sites, printed media, roll up banners, on telly...  Anywhere you can think to use them, you can.  I really don't mind.

Get Off Your Arse Photoshoot

I've probably taken more photographs of 4Networkings Managing Director Brad Burton than anyone else during the last few years.  We had another photoshoot, our first since the release of Brad's "Get Off Your Arse" book last week after a 4Networking meeting in Lincoln.

A photoshoot with Brad is unlike a photoshoot with anyone else.  It's typical Brad, high energy, fast paced but the job gets done.  This shoot was no exception.  Brad knew what he wanted and the shoot from start to finish took no more than 3 minutes.

I'm not talking about Brad just because I get a credit in his book, because I'm his official photographer or because I consider him a mate but also because of the way we really got talking and working together is featured in the book.

It was around 2 years ago, I'd met Brad at a 4N breakfast in Poole, and a few days later he called me to ask how I was doing.

To quote a few lines from his book...

"Normally the response would have been 'Fine', but it went something like this.

'Do you want the truth or the BS'

'Give me the bull.'

'Yeah business is great; I got orders coming in from all angles.'

'The reality?'

'Debtors piling up, no leads, feeling ill, and I don't know where to turn.'"

It just goes to prove that sometimes honestly is the best policy.  A few weeks after the phone call I found myself at the 4Networking headquarters in Taunton photographing Brad, Tim, Terry, Tasmin and Abby.  My work has gone on to feature on the first 3 covers of the their 4Community magazine.
